How to choose a bong? The Ultimate guide, Part 1 - Materials

There are a few things we need to consider when choosing a bong, including the material, shape and design. While some creative weed smokers will make a bong out of just about anything, some materials are more common than others for bong production. These are some of the most common types of bongs available for South African weed smokers:

Glass

Glass is the most well-known material used for making bongs, and many smokers assert that glass bongs provide the best smoking experience. Glass cools down easily, and doesn’t affect the flavour of the weed. This results in a pure, unadulterated tasting smoke. Transparent glass also makes it easy to spot and clean any resin build-up. The biggest downside of glass bongs is that they can break relatively easily when dropped.

Plastic / Acrylic

Plastic or acrylic bongs are the second most common material for making bongs. Plastic bongs are quite sturdy, and are less likely to break if dropped when compared to glass bongs. They are also quite easy to clean, and super portable as they are significantly lighter than their glass counterparts. They are however more prone to build-up when compared to glass bongs, so it’s a good idea to rinse them and change the water regularly.

Silicone

Silicone bongs are the new kid on the block when it comes to bong building materials, and they have some unique benefits. For starters, they are basically indestructible. You can fold them, throw them, and smack your friends with them. Their super light weight and durability also make them highly portable. Some are even dishwasher safe. However, they may not give a smoking experience as smooth as glass bongs.

Ceramic

Ceramic bongs are usually much heavier than other bong types. This means they are best for at – home use rather than on the go. But since clay is easy to sculpt with, ceramic bongs come in a huge variety of shapes and designs when compared to other materials. They are also easy to clean and don’t tend to accumulate resin. Their main downfall is their weight and relative fragility.

Metal

Metal bongs are not as common as other materials, for a good reason. While they are sturdy, durable and usually inexpensive, the metal can affect the taste and smoothness of the smoke.
